I finally found time to give an update, I'll post this here and in SoCal.
Well guys, it was great being in Hawaii and seeing my sailor kid on her ship,
the Makin Island (LHD8) amphibious assault ship
As usual for me, none of my trip went as I planned but the good news is we spent
two days on the beautiful island and I did get to wheel in Oahu. It was late by
the time I headed out to explore so the 1st day I took Highway 1 until it ended
at a dirt road, I believe this is the Wai‘anae route or Keawaula Section just
pass satellite tracking station rd and we did an awesome night run on lower side
of Kaena Point, gnarly cliffs over the ocean! The following morning, we hit up
Kaena Pointe State Park trail the rides along beach's coastline until it ends at
the gate to the preserve. All in all, it was pretty cool, can't wait to do it again.
My son Alex and I had a blast on the Tiger Cruise nagivating through the ship's
entricate levels of various stairs and scuttles. We toured the ship to check out
the cool working parts of the rooms for engine, steering, anchor and various
workshops. The Marines MEU laid out their spread of weaponry for us to pick up
and play with, that was sweet. It was awesome being around harrier jets,
helicopters, humvees, tanks, lcacs and other vessels. Especially when they lit
them up and did some live fire demos as they flew between the 3 ships in our
group. We participated in the family 5k run/walk on the flight deck. Enjoyed
eating in the mess deck. They even celebrated Fathers day with steak and
lobster. What is real cool too was they scheduled a steel deck picnic where we
all would go out on the flight deck to eat bbq style food and be able to be on
the flight deck but it was too windy so they brought it into the hanger bay.
Fun stuff going on like a basketball game, sumo suits wrestling, hot dog eating
contests and other games.
I'm still going through pics and videos and will post them up as soon as I can.
I was hoping to post sooner but I've been tied up with just stuff and now my
jeep is out of commision for now.
Oh yeah, shout out to the jeepers on the island for helping me out while
trekking around. Cosmos Blue/Eric helped me while on that nite run. Da
Runt/Travis gave me some info I needed too.
Aloha!
