I did 20 years in the Navy. Did a lot of traveling. Boot Camp in San Diego, CA, the tech school there. Another tech school in Great Lakes, IL (next to North Chicago, which is around 30 miles north of Chicago. Got to go to the Playboy Club (we actually spent the night there. They had a military discount). Went to the Chicago Auto Show. Museum of Science and Industry and the Field Museum. Pretty cool. Then back to CA for more school in Mare Island (by Vallejo). Back to SD to the USS Tarawa, which is a amphibious ship. It had CH-46's, CH-53's, Cobras, Hueys, and Harrier jets. I got to fly in CH-46's and a Huey to go to another ship to fix their equipment. It's strange taking off from a ship; it's looks like the ship is moving away from you. We did a deployment across the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. Got to see Africa (Kenya). After that I did 6 months at Ft. Gordon, GA for another school. Then it was on the Norway and NATO duty. I was there 45 months and got to ride my '81 Sturgis from the tip of Denmark to 70 klicks south of Rome in 4 days. Talk about a sore ass (and back, arms, etc). After Norway, they sent me to Virginia Beach for leadership training for 2 weeks and 2 weeks at Norfolk. Then it was back overseas to Holy Loch, Scotland and the USS Simon Lake. I met my Ex-wife while there . After that, it was back to the US to the sub base at Groton, CT. Our daughter was born there (but she was "made" in TX). We did 42 months and got my final set of orders. Yep, back to Europe. Sigonella, Sicily. That was the craziest place I've ever been, except for maybe the Philippines. Driving there is wild and Americans had frequent collisions, but we were lucky. Then I retired and came back to Texas. It's been 10 years as of 04/01/2008. Sorry for the long diatribe, but a few of you may enjoy it.
