Default Help with Johnson outboard

I'm sorry to bother in here, but I do not know anyone else that could help and I got no specialized shops nearby.
Got my hands on a Johnson 15hp 2-stroke, should be a 2004. Tried and tested, all ran fine. The previous owner had remote controls on it, and to retain portability (for a small inflatable) I decided to remove them, thing that went well (I am OK with tools, but never worked on a marine engine).
So now I check the tiller and I find that the throttle cable was neatly tucked on a side, and looks like it has never been connected. Any idea how is to be connected to the engine? It should tie to the large plastic lever where the remote cable was attached, but how? (sorry camera phone)

Another problem, perhaps an adjustment .... I cannot manage to put it in gear: when I push or pull the gear lever, there is not enough travel to "engage". For fear of breaking something I do not pull/push stronger, but is there any particular thing to consider here?

Thanks in advance to anyone familiar with these engines that can help ... I'd really like to try it before the summer is over
I also looked for a workshop manual but couldn't find any specific (to buy I mean). Any reference is welcome
