Default Sunrise.......

Martha's Vineyard, Wasque....

What a beautiful place... I fished this past week in the Vineyard Derby, managed to pull off a 2nd place daily finish for Striped Bass

*Note the JK sticker, had a few people ask me if my Jeep was a Special Edition

Well...this weekend was my first attempt. There was a whole lot of fishing but no catching, which is cool. I did "hook" the pier a few times! And the crabs loved the bunker bait. They went back into the water. There were a few salty gents going for sea bass (which I know is totally different than striped bass) using calms as bait. They would keep changing locations approx. every 20 minutes. They seemed successful at catching - too small to keep though.

So my Q is: Should you cast in different locations throughout the day or do you pick your spot and hunker down? I suppose it is partially dependent on the fish sought as well as location (beach, pier, boat in open water, lake, etc.)

2nd Q: This weekend-were you on a boat or on the beach? My fishing is over for the season but will be back out next Spring and would like to go for striped bass at that time.

1.) Shore fishing (all i do really is surfcast) is best at false dawn and sunset. and night throughout the fall. Look for structure and current. Learn your spots, you will know when they produce and when they are slow.
Without knowing 1 single thing about a place, i would go around 2 hrs before high tide until 2 hrs after, learn it well in the day and go back at night, Check it out at dead low, looking for structure etc....

2.)I was strictly surfcasting, 33 fish from 34" up to about 40" nothing huge but a good bend in the rod.

Thank you. Will share this info with the fellow who took me out. It seems like we will wind up being fishing buddies as we have the same sort of mental attitude.

I want to try surfcasting. Like being closer to the water and sand. Will let you know how it goes when I get to that point.

anytime, I love sharing the sport. I am passionate about surfcasting, like you said, just closer to nature...
