That's a difficult question to answer. It depends upon what kind of fish you are after, hatches of flies native to your area, time of year, etc. The best thing you can do is go to a local fly fishing store and ask for "the fly fishing expert" and listen to his advice. No sense buying a lot of useless feathers, streamers, etc. He will be happy to give you the proper information and may even tell you where the fish are biting. After all, he wants you to become a good customer and maybe purchase a nice rod and reel from him in the future. Trust his advice and pick up a good how-to book. Have a blast fishing and take pride in whatever you catch on your personally tied fly. There is no feeling like it.

Yep, I was going to say pretty much the same thing. Check out some of the local shops and see what they recommend. Some may even have free fly tieing workshops you can participate in.

i know it's a little old of a topic... but it is tying season after all
go to flytyingforum.com and look around there in the beginner section.... defiantly can learn a lot real fast from those guys. there's all kinds of topics on what beginners should buy and what not... and they have some online live fly tying sessions where the pros will tie in front of a pretty good quality web cam and you can ask questions in the process.
their fly database is massive and you can search by what you are targeting or trying to match different hatches.
also youtube isnt too bad if you know which flies you are looking to tie already.

Gravel Gertie hit it right on the nose. Then when you look at the scope of the selection of patterns like in the link thegreathoe posted... LOL!!
Be careful TR, next thing you know, you have an entire room of your house dedicated to various capes, pelts, tinsels, yarns, hooks, etc, etc... Oh, and the waders, the different fly rods for different fishing situations. Most undubidubly with poor lighting
Tying is a terrific pastime. Catching one on you're own pattern is...........
