Default Pismo or Morro bay camping?

We are heading up the coast from San Diego to San Francisco and would like to camp one night along the way around Pismo or Morro bay. I see there are campgrounds around there but none that seem to be actually on the beach. Is there any camping right on the beach along the central coast? Or are you allowed to drive on dunes/beach? I've seen pics like this but not sure of location.

Any preference on an overnight spot along the central coast? Right now I'm thinking morro dunes... standard camping area but RIGHT NEAR the beach. Any good?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hey squid,

Pismo coast village would be the closest to the beach. If your pulling a travel trailer they have Hookups and everything you need, walking distance to beach.
If you're roughing it or not afraid to drive down on the beach, you can tent and trailer camp right on the dunes on the beach. If you stay on the dunes And your pulling a trailer air down to about 15 pounds. Once on the dunes you can take your jeep anywhere back there not fenced off and it's fairly cheap, maybe $10 a night

Too cold to rough it in jan or feb... We used to camp on the beach, but now we always stay at pacific plaza hotel. It's walking distance to beach, stores, liquor store and restaurants. If your going to drive your jeep on the beach, head over to the carwash on grand ave and rinse the under carriage. Salt water can attack faster than u can say JEEP WAVE. :-) have fun on your trip

Thanks for the tips. We ended up staying at Morro Bay Dunes RV park... awesome little spot and could let the dog run on the beach! There were even horse back riders on the beach there. Cool spot and great little town.
