Default Canada Customs (Tax & Duties) Question

I'm currently in the US and flying back to Canada in the morning. I've been down here for a week and I can have up to $700 duty free.

Can that $700 be claimed for something that is currently waiting for me to pick it up in the US? I ordered a rack for my Jeep and I have to drive 45 minutes to New York state to pick it up. I was hoping that I could inform Canadian customs at the airport that I purchased something and that is currently waiting to be picked up in the US. Then in a couple of days I will drive down grab my stuff and then head back.

Does anyone know if this is possible or legal?

i dont know for sure, so this might not be of any help... take it with a grain of salt. I wouldn't thing that was something you could do, your exemption if for items while you're down there. Seeing as you didnt buy the item while you were in the U.S. you arent really entitled to it. I suppose it might be possible to convince the person that you bought it and had it drop shipped there (obviously if you're flying taking a cargo rack with you on the plane isnt an option), but likely not legal, nor do i recommend it.. again, i dont know this 100% or not, maybe it is perfectly fine... I suppose the best thing to do would be to call canada customs and ask.

allowable is based on per visit, and is not able to be carried forward as a credit.
for subsequent visits
so jump out of the plane before u hit the border p/u rack and then come across all in one visit and ur good
other wise start buyin things now to claim when u land

I know the limits are per visit and can't be carried forward, but there is that question on the customs form, that asks if anything you purchased is not accompanying you back.

I'll just leave that section of the form blank until I get up to speak to the customs guide and see what they say, I figure it can't hurt to ask.

Found this on the CBSA website (http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publicati...-eng.html#P024)

After each absence of 7 days or more

You can claim up to CAN$750 worth of goods without paying any duties. Although you can include some tobacco products and alcoholic beverages, a partial exemption may apply to cigarettes, tobacco products or manufactured tobacco. See the section called "Alcohol and tobacco" for more details. With the exception of tobacco products and alcoholic beverages, you do not need to have the goods with you when you arrive.

I'm currently in possession of a tax and duty exception note for the value of the Jeep. Now I just need to find time to go and get it, come home, bolt it on, attach kayak carrier, and then find time to load the kayaks up and try it out.

I think I'll just skip another week of work and tell my manager that I was planning on coming back on the 26th all along.

And the two border agencies dont communicate at all. So they could take pics of the plate all day long...and the corresponding border agency would not know...the US guys dont talk to Can and vice versa....
