Default Good Vibrations at 100 km/h...?

Oh my sister's loved that song...

Hello friends. I just put on the winter tires on and got them balanced after I felt this slightly aggressive shake at 100km/h.

Assuming tires needed balancing, but after driving it out of the shop, same deal. Mechanic told me it might be the driveshaft u-joint seizing up. Have any of you expirienced this shake before?

The mechanic thought at first that it may be an axle u-joint ( which we had replaced this summer ) but everything was tight.

He gave me a number to another mechanic that specializes in driveshafts. But before I do that, maybe I can solve this mystery on my own here at Jk Forum . And who knows, maybe even get the wife to replace it ( the ultimate dream ). Lol

Any clues???

thx.

Did you get rims with the winter tires. If you did put the other tire and rims on and see if you still have the shake. Or if you suspect the front ds you can remove it and go for a drive to see if the shake is gone.

Yeah, winters are on there own rims. And I didn't feel the vibrations with my Goodyears ( not that I think I would have ). It feels like it happened overnight, when I put the winters on. And you can remove a driveshaft and still drive? Oh brother I got a lot to learn.

update: Jeepgirl just explained to me 4 wheel drive and how there's 2 driveshafts. Lol.

Also there's some play in front ds, i.e., it turns like a clock if you will. To 1 O'clock then back to 12- I know that's a horrible analogy but I'm french colisse Is that normal?

Removing front ds and driving is fine. Ive done it. If it happened right after the tires went on then its probably the culprit. Throw the summers on and find out.

Ok, so I guess maybe take the front ds out see if vibrations still happen? Is it straight forward to remove you think?

Ya pretty easy you need 3/4 wrench for one end and a 8 mm 12 point wrench and socket for other end. Make sure its a 12 point or you will strip the bolt. Go on project jk and there is a writeup on removing the front ds. Honestly i would throw your other tires on first and see. Much easier and it will rule them out or reveal them as the problem.

I was thinking that, but wouldn't you not feelthe vibes with the mudders on? Because like I said it seems like it was overnight. From my mudders ( no noticeble vibes ) to winters where I now feel the vibration.

If you dont feel the vibe with the mt's on then you will know its the winter tire and rims that you just put on. Just because they say the the winters are balanced properly doesnt mean its gospel. It happened right after the winters went on correct. I would start there and since you have a spare set of wheels its easy to do the swaparoo. Leave the ds on and switch tge tires and see what happens. If the vibe is still there you can move on to an other area.

Like Biggy said it's probably your winter tires since this happened as soon as you put them on. But your mechanic did mention your DS might be failing. Did you check to make sure you haven't torn your rubber boot on your front DS? If you have, it might be spitting grease and causing it to seize and fail. Since you do drive an automatic and wheel it with the sway bar disconnected your DS could of rubbed your tranny skid causing your boot to rip.
