Default Jeep Problems; Alternator or not?

So Jeep wouldn't turn over and I assumed the battery was dead. Boosted it to get it to the mechanic. We check with voltage meter, it was low. So I got a new battery ( used but new to me) And took the jeep out yesterday shopping. It wouldn't start again. Apparently I didn't tighten on of the posts enough. All good I tightened it and it started on a dime.

However, I wanted to check alternator at the same time just in case, so when it was running I pulled the positive off and the engine shut off 5-7 seconds later. From my experience that means it's the alternator. But in checking around for a new one, the guy at the store told me some of these newer vehicles ( '09 ) will shut off regardless if you remove a post cable while running. So without going to mechanics again, can any of you confirm that to be true? Can you start your Jeep and remove a cable for 'ol KidWrangler ! Or know if it would shut off regardless?

Thanks a lot.

I've always heard to pull the negative cable, not the positive to check your alternator.

Ok, so you're right. Removed the negative and she kept running. Problem solved. Thank you bud.
