Default Need Advice on used JK's

No no, not for me.

A friend of mine in Ottawa is considering buying a JK, used, probably a Rubicon, 2 door. He looked at this one today:

http://www.autocatch.com/used-cars/2...ler~360606.htm

Looks pretty good, and the guy is willing to move a little on the price and they're offering him what he thinks is a good trade in value on is car.

There's also this one:

http://www.autocatch.com/used-cars/2...ler~357115.htm

But we're not sure what's going on with the mods and the Project-JK.com decal. Was it a magazine car, shop car, contest reward... or just a project? Anybody know anything about this particular truck?

He's thinking he might do some light off-roading, but nothing too extreme, and isn't sure about the mods on the green one.

Anyway, just looking for some input on the prices of these things, and maybe any tips on things to check on them. Achilles heel type of stuff since I don't know much about JK's.

The Project-JK decals are ordered from here.....

Judging by the manual windows and location of the sticker... im gonna say its a X... meaning no lockers or disconects.

Go for a Rubi... if you dont...you WILL regret it in the future....

I agree with the Hawk.
The green one is an 08 "X" model.
Mechanically the same as the Sahara but without the bells and whistles.
It looks like it has a modest lift and aftermarket tires. but doesn't have the Dana 44 front axle, the Rubi transfer case ,lockers, and probably doesn't have the sway bar disconnect (this was an option package on the 08 "X" but very rare)

Either JK could be wheeled as is, the Rubi being more capable because of the lockers. But with upgraded front axles, quick disconnects, an air compressor and lockers, the X could be just as capable (Ask trick Cyclist if you don't believe me )
It depends on how much he wants to put into it. The lift on the "X" is only worth it if it accommodates the wheel size "Your friend " wants
Tell him to buy either one and bring it down next weekend to learn how to drive it at JKJam

I already talked to him about that.

Thanks guys. I already told him to get a Rubi in any case, I wasn't aware that Project one wasn't a Rubi. That's why I came to the pros.

What do you guys think of the pricing on that Rubi? I built and priced a new one, and it came out to $32k for the same thing. I'm not sure how much you can haggle them down from there? They are doing 2.75% interest right now, and a used truck would be 8%. That's worth at least $3000 right there. The dealer said they might take $26k, but I think more like $24 would be a better price?

He had a TJ in the past.

No, the $26k is for a 2009 with 10,000 km.

Oh, and another question. The truck has the hard top installed, but the soft top is not underneath. The truck is listed as having both tops, but the sales guy doesn't know where the soft top is. I guess on the TJ's, the hard top installed over the soft top? Is that still the case? Wondering if the soft top is gone, or if they must have it hidden in the shop somewhere.

Go with the Rubi.. right out of the box you can't beat it...

Sorry to say Jenna.. You can run both tops at the same time... Granted it's not pretty, but it can be done.. That's how we picked up 4Bummer's Rubi from Peel Chrysler.

If He's doing light offroading just go with an X or Sahara but if he's interested in moving up eventually then go Rubicon

Well, the dealer jerked him around as they all do. He went in to do the deal, then the sales manager said they could only give him $11k for his trade, not the previously agreed upon $14k.

Damn I hate shopping for used cars. It's such a PITA.

He's going to sell the car himself then do a pure cash deal.

No, I think if you're really doing any off-road at all, the Rubi is the way to go. You need those lockers because the factory traction control isn't very good.
