To all the OBX folks.
I missed the earlier get together this year but me and the misses are thinking about getting up there in September. We stayed at Ocean Isle last year, her idea, and did a day trip to Ft. Fisher. She loved riding on the beach. I told her we should have stayed farther north but what can you do? I've been to the outer banks several times in my youth but I'm not familiar with the area or rules. Is there any camping around or are any areas of better for jeeping/sightseeing? We usually take a couple pretty nice trip every year but we bought a new house this spring and we're little more budget conscious now. Thanks in advance!

You have about 20 miles of beach to wheel on. Camping available. The island has everything you could want but you have to get there by ferry. I would go in mid October when it's still warm and the turtles are not nesting.
Thanks for the info.
We were up there the first week in October last year and it turned unseasonably, maybe an under statement, cold. My wife has to put in for leave from work soon and we have to arrange for someone to watch our 4yo, so I'm hoping to go earlier this year to avoid that. It sucks to be at the beach and its too cold to wear shorts!

Agree go in Oct we just got back from the OBX and alot of the beaches are still closed from nesting turtles and birds. Here is a link that I use before I visit to check to see what beaches are open and closed. http://www.preservebeachaccess.org/l...aysaccess.html
Your wife will love the obx especially Ocracoke

I was thinking bout traveling the entire length of the islands and camping some. We will probably be there on weekdays. Is it really that busy up there during the week and after Labor Day. I figured the it would slow down a lot by say the second or third week in Sept.
kashlak- thanks for the link. I didn't see any closers after Sept 15th last year so I think I'll be ok.

I am sure you will be fine after labor day. I hope you enjoy hubby and I plan on doing the whole stretch of 12 some year too.

Ill be down 1st week in Aug in Hatteras and most beaches should be open. August is your best month to get good weather and more beaches to drive on. Theres a few XOA places to camp. Late August/September gets to be hurricane season. I would take the ferry to Ocracoke and or another to Hatteras to camp.
In September there are a lot of really affordable fishing dumps to stay in. We always stay in them as I like them more and most are pet friendly.
If all beaches are open you can drive from south Ocracoke,Hatteras,Buxton,north/south of Avon, south of Rodanthe,Oregon Inlet, and then not until north of Corolla.

Is there anything special to remember? I live at the beach but its a WHOLE other thing. I think I've got the basics down: sun screen, water, food, shovel, fishing pole, towels. It will be the misses and I for about 5 days.
Any tips or tricks y'all have picked up along the way?
I'm considering kayaking. Anyone here with much experience?
