Default Inspection in VA

New to Virginia, moved to the Roanoke area; anyone had issues with the Virginia state inspection? Went and spent half a day trying to get my JK inspected and they told me my headlights "...aren't DOT" and I needed a "letter from the sheriff's department" regarding my lift? It's not even that much of a lift (3.5" RK).

Sounds like bs the headlights have to be dot so if you got aftermarket print the specs from the web to show its dot approved. The lift depends on what inspection station you go to. But ask the next cop you see and ask for a letter

Wi went to the sheriffs dept today and they stated there was no "letter". The law states 29" from the ground to the bottom of the front bumper. I see lifted Jeeps all over this area though. My IPF headlights are not DOT (I don't think anyway) but I have a set of LED Anzo's that are so I'll swept them this week

No clue what to do about the bumper?

What is your bumper hight?

There is a state law for bumper hight but I don't think it is cheked during the safety inspection. Now since you are in the southwest part of the state, the state police and most county cops will pull you over. Plus if get in an accident it could cause a lot of trouble for you.

As for the inspection, I have to check but think the rules something couldn't be missing and a suspension component can't touch or be restricted or something like that.

I have never had a problem until this past month. They didn't like the lights on the front, a 50" bar and long beams on the bumper. The guy doing the inspection though was cool, and he told me to just disconnect the wires. When the wires are not connected then the lights are considered an "ornament". I have never had a problem with lift. I have a 3" RK with 35" tires.

Try another inspection station. It would also be good to get to know the folks at the place you pick so that they will give you the benefit of the doubt.

Good luck.

BTW, there are several good trails out there. Here is a Google map. https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer...4.kiphaovesbL8 The next trail I am going to do is Shoe Creek and Big Levels in mid July.

Find a new place to get it inspected, southwestern va is full of shops that basically go "eh, looks good.... Here ya'goes, sir" Welcome to VA, best damn Commonwealth in the country, especially where you just moved to.

I never had an issue when I lived down there. The small county cops and sheriffs will leave you alone unless you're blatantly speeding of doing something dumb. If you do get pulled over for something, be respectful and they'll let you go as long as you don't have a warrant out for your arrest.

I live in the Hampton Roads area, I have a 3.5" lift, a 22" light bar on my bumper and lights on the A pillar. when I got my last inspection the only problem I had was the A pillar lights had to have covers on them. I asked If I could turn them around or disconnect them. They said I had to take them off if I didn't put covers on them.
