Default Jones Beach with No Permit??

So I just got my 2008 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara about 4 weeks ago and I have been loving every minute spent behind the wheel.
Options listed below.

My question is...if you are driving on the beach at night without a permit..what are the consequences of driving without a permit? I picked up my Wrangler on 5/24/2008 and immediately was looking into obtaining a beach permit..but was disappointed when I found out they stopped selling them 4/30...so this passed weekend I was driving on Ocean Pkwy late at night with a couple of friends had my doors off for the first time so we figured why not take a drive.

Anyway traveling down Ocean Pkwy we wound up in Suffolk by Gilgo beach...Pulled over to log on with my iphone to find out where the beach entrances were...

Found an entrance right on Ocean Pkwy about 1/4 mile up and was surprised that there was no booth or anyone checking permits. There was a sign that said Permit Only 4x4 Beach Access. Now I obviously did not have a permit but since I was there figured why not.....Drove on saw a few other trucks out there mostly all parked camping or fishing.

Since I cannot get a permit till next year wondering what the consequences are if I were to get stopped and caught with no permit.

If it is a minor fine I can deal with the risk...Does anyone have any experience with this? Or does anyone know where I can obtain a pass/permit at this time of the year? Also is there anywhere I can legally go? I live in Syosset (for registration purposes actually live in Douglaston Queens (paying half the car insurance in Syosset saving about 3g's a year)...

Also if anyone can point me in the right direction and is down to show this rookie the ropes a little that would be greatly appreciated. Wife is prego and tends to be asleep by 9pm so I am available just about every night for the next 6 months or so.

Thanks
Lou

AWSOME!!! so now im in a fighting match w/ them trying to get this figured out. but they must have 1 armed monkeys answering e-mails b/c it usually takes their customer service reps a day or two to respond to me
I picked up a set of universal mirrors from AutoZone. Pilot brand "euro style mirrors" just had to ream out the bracket a little bit but they bolt right onto the jeep using the 2 windshield bolts.

Not the greatest regarding visibility but at least I am legal.

Someone has a write-up on them...thats where I got the idea
$14.95/each

welcome to the site Lou. I live right near Robert Moses beach, and dont have a state permit.. Im sure its only a fine.. maybe in the $130 range.. but, If you are going to make a habbit of driving the beach, at least keep the necessary supplies with you in case you get stopped.. for Suffolk Beaches (Smith Point or the like) you need.. Fire Extinguisher, shovel, jack board, first aid kit, tow rope, air compressor, PSI gauge, i think thats all.. and I believe on the state beaches, your only supposed to be fishing, not daytripping. which is why i opted out of the state 4x4 permit. the county permit allows tailgating, open fires whatever..

congrats on the JK. and this site will be your home, it gets quite addictive. OH and congrats on with the kid (I think)

Thanks for the tips....I am definetly loving the new JK...I have always had sports cars my whole life...but after totalling my last car 2007 BMW 335i coupe and my insurance company taking months and months to finally pay it off...found out my wife is pregnant (which is a good thing as far as we are concerned so I appreciate the congrats), new house on the horizon...Wanted something safer, bigger, and a smaller payment but also wanted something that I could still have fun with. Not being an SUV guy and wanting a lower monthly payment there was really nothing out there that fit my needs like the JK does. Overall I am very happy with the decision, and look forward to having some off road fun.

I will definetly be stocking up on the necessary equipment, I have a tow strap in the trunk, but need to get a more capable jack then the factory one, have the jacking board, want to get those tire deflator things (the ones that you set to the PSI you want and it airs it down) I have a portable compressor, power convertor, air hose, first aid kit, I guess I can keep a bucket in the car and call that the porta potty? I have a fire extinguisher, and jackboard...So I just need a couple of things...if anyone is planning any trips on long island or smith's point etc day or night let me know I would love to tag along...would fell much more confident doing some wheeling with someone with experience.

Thanks again...and I look forward to helping, learning and getting my JK muddy with fellow enthusiasts.

I know how addicting these forums can be, when I had my BMW I was very active on e90post which was a 3series forum...Spent more time on the forum reading, learning, getting mod ideas and attending meets. However I think the meets on this forum are going to be a hell of alot more fun since most of them will probably take place off road lol...All of the BMW meets were basically a bunch of guys sitting in a parking lot admiring each others cars, mods etc followed by a local cruise...where we would usually be stuck in traffic driving to another photo destination lol. and worry about getting brake dust on our wheels before the next photo shoot..lol..Something tells me the Jeep meets are going to be a little different.

I picked up the same pepboys mirrors, had to ream them as well but it'l do the job.

I think Gilgo is considered town of Babylon, no? Maybe its a town permit, ive heard stories about patrols over there, Democrat point has a booth during the summer. I got pulled over on Thursday and questioned and I wasnt even on the sand, I was fishing by the park office, theres too much state park police around during the summer so be careful.

As far as RC I'm down but not for blues and blacks if they are anything like the blues and blacks at paragon and I have no lockers or limited slip. Pines are a different story since its mostly trails, little rocks. I'm usually available on Saturdays.

P.S. Smith Point is closed still due to bird nesting or something, it will open later in the summer. They have day permits and let you tailgate and bbq on the sand.

not sure what a "blue or black" is I am assuming it is the trail difficulty...and more rock crawling type stuff...I'm new to the game and my sahara is my DD and is all stock for now I am going to keep it simple and as I get more experience and more $ for mods I'll work up to the bigger stuff.

I'm down for paragon, RC, Pines whatever. Weekends are fine for me as long as I can give my wife some notice, so she doesn't make plans that I don't know about and then get pissed for me scheduling something when we already have plans lol gotta love the scrambled mind of a prego woman. lol

I went to Rausch Creek when my Sahara was stock (It pretty much still is) I was pretty amazed, I only wish I removed my side steps before I went because they tended to get hung up on things..
