Glad to hear you and your friends can talk about what happened. The little hand held stay in contstant contact smart phones aren't worth the lives they have touched.
With my 13 year old daughter caught up in all the texting thing, I showed her this video from ATT. They are running adds now, but this really drove it home to her WHY I do not answer her texts while driving.

I think vehicles should have some kind of jamming device so a cell phone won't work inside the vehicle if the engine is running. No matter how much we try to educate people there will always be smart-ass kids and moron adults who think common sense applies to everyone but them. Pity that it would also disable cell service for the passengers, but that's better than people getting killed over a damn text message.

These jamming devices already exist. They plug into the obd2 port on vehicle and when engine is running the jammer is active. The problem is that everyone in car is jammed and anyone driving by u is jammed. They are working on refining that technology now to be more focused on driver than everyone.

here's a more practical idea... lock your phone in the center console when you get in the car get it out before you leave your car. You can't respond to a text if you can't touch your phone.

The video should be mandatory in every school. Unfortunately, as with many things, many people don't think (believe) it could happen to them. It happens to "the other person." Until that other person becomes them!!
People just need to put down their phones when driving!!!
