Goldsboro is cheap to live. Hell, anywhere in NC is cheap to live compared to Staten Island. We are 2 hrs from the beach and 3 hrs from Uwharrie. small town life 35,000 people or so. Raleigh is an hour down the road.

My friend just retired into a house out on the coast, and he's loving it there. I think he moved south of Wilmington, but I'm not totally sure (I'm going for a visit in a couple of weeks, I should know by then where he's at! )

My (ex/sig other/too confused to know whats going on, so we'll go with ex) is in Fayetteville.

I do not recommend Fayetteville. Charlotte is nice, some beautiful parts there. Though, I'd recommend some of the suburbs of Charlotte. Take a look at Lake Norman area. Its expensive though. A few friends of mine made their way to the Charlotte area and are loving it there. Nascar weekends can be a bit hectic though, if you don't like Nascar.

My cousin is in Apex/Cary area (suburb of Raliegh/Durham) and he's really enjoying it there. I'm close to moving there or Charlotte myself. Not sure about retirement area though... I'm hoping to move my career there.

I live outside the city limits. New neighborhood on a Cul-de-sac with woods and a creek behind the house, lots of wildlife. 2200sq ft, 4br, 2.5 bath, 1.6 acres $250G. I finished the heated/ac walkout basement myself so now it's 3300sq ft with a home theater and spare room/office downstairs.Click image for larger version
