Welcome - check the sticky thread on places to wheel in the area.... others have added all the places that allow legal wheeling...

Last weekend I wheeled the Peters Mill Run trail in GWNF between Edinburg and Woodstock. I had planned on wheeling Taskers Gap also, but the going got really slow when I took the side trail up Green Mtn. (it wasn't posted on site, but I since have seen on a USFS map that the trail is for vehicles <50", i.e., ATV and motorcycles). If you stay off this trail, you should have to trouble in Peters Mill Run. Can't speak to Taskers Gap, but I'd say it's worth checking out.
BTW, the route I took from Loudoun County was beautiful. ( I entered the GWNF from the east in Fort Valley near the small hamlet of Detrick, VA). This takes you to the north entrance of Peters Mill Run. The alternative would be to go directly to Taskers Gap in Edinburg where you can access the Taskers Gap Trail on one side of Edinburg Gap Road (VA-675 I think) and Peters Mill Run on the other.

You need a USFS permit which I purchased at the Fort Valley General Store in Detrick for $5.00.

i knew there was a reason i stopped going to peter's mill... that daily charge. why they started that up is beyound me. there are dozens of other trails in GWNF that don't cost a dime. That trail is nice in the fall, but otherwise, its rather uneventful, no ofense.

I'd check out Stoney Run, if you want a fun trail. Something thats not so challanging could be Dry River, 2nd Mt, or Flag Pole. those are just a few.

As a new wheeler, I thought the $5.00 charge was pretty sweet, assuming the funds go directly to trail maintenance (not very likely). I have no problem directly supplementing the funding of such a valuable resource. Now if only they'd be a little less inclined to close off OHV trails.

I agree that Peter's Mill Run is not very eventful, but it's not bad for getting your 4wd feet wet, and it's better than sitting in traffic in Northern Virginia!
