Uwharrie with stock JK
I have a new 2013 jk. I'd like to take it to Uwharrie, but I have some doubts. I know "it's a jeep", but are there beginner trails that I can go on that won't tear me up? Am I ok without a lift and with my crappy little road tires? Is my paint going to get all scratched up from tree branches? Do I need a winch first?
Thanks.
Thanks.
I would stick to the easy and moderate trails at Uwharrie with your stock JK. All the trails are well maintained and you won't scratch up your paint unless you get way off track. The moderate trails have one or two larger obstacles to contend with but they also have bypasses. Take it slow and enjoy your time there. I was there about a month ago and had a great time running the trails.
I'm not familiar with Uwharrie, but you will be amazed at what you can do with those "crappy street tires". I did all kinds of blues and winter wheeling at rausch with stock 32" SRA's. They amazed the hell out of me and many others! Definitely make sure you air down to at least 18-20 psi and disconnect your sway bars (my preference is DIY quick disconnects: 7/16x2.5" clevis pin, 2 washers and a hitch pin for $6 at lowes). It makes SO much difference. Do that and you'll have no problem following the rubi's around if you can drive, I've seen me do it
Just stay clear of Daniel trail if no-one is with you. Even then a couple of sections you risk some damage underneath. I have seen a stock JKU make it through. Dickey Bell has one hill section you will have to be careful on, but should be ok. All of the rest of the trails are easy to ride through. Is yours a JK or JKU? If it is a JKU, be prepared to drag your frame on almost all of the water breaks on the trails. It's only dirt and won't hurt anything, but I really didn't like it. Now with a lift and 35's I don't have that problem any more. Where are you in NC, and when do you plan on going?
If you are traveling with someone who has traveled Daniel before then you'll be fine getting spotted. I've been on it a couple of times and at the time my jku had rubi springs and shocks. I scaped skid plates but nothing big. I say do it if your with a group of people.
If you go this weekend look for the Carolina Trail Stalkers, they will be there and ride with them. It's a great family oriented group of guys. I'm a member but moved away to PA.

You will be fine. Uwharrie is a great place to learn your way around your rig. There are lots of easy trails.
FYI....The Kodak Rock area on Rocky Mtn Loop is closed between Saw Mill and Slab Pile. Oh, and they have not opened Lake View yet.
We may head out that way this Sunday 7/28
