Sunk Mine Road (Off of Dennytown Rd/Rt 301) Putnam County
I haven't been on this road in about 10 years
I could have changed since, but back then it was a "seasonal, unmaintained road"
Go there after a nice rain or snow storm and there was plenty of ravines, ruts, mud, snow, and slippery slopes
On a dry, summer day though, I could navigate it no problem in my Subaru Outback, though I did bottom out a few times.
The Appalachian Trail also crosses Sunk Mine Road
There is also a nice little rocky dirt road on the right hand side off of Dennytown Road before you make the left to hit Sunk Mine Road...it use to lead to the Taconic Outdoor Educational Camp and has a lot of twists and turns and single lane passing.
Also further up 301 towards Carmel is Chuang Yen Monastery that is cool to drive around...after entering it from 301, on the right hand side, there use to be a old logging road...very intense....didn't see any "do not enter" signs, though I may have missed them....

FWIW, after a real nice snow or rain storm, there is a twisty rut filed dirt road that goes around the Croton Reservoir and pump station, that will lead you to the top of the Croton Dam.

Lets Wheel!
Damn...I forgot another cool trail in Putnam County...Ninham Mountain...defining feature is its 100-foot metal tower at the top of the mountain, which is the tallest historic fire tower in New York State (I've climbed to the top of it, what a stunning view!)
Once you drive up the access road off of Gypsy Trail Road and wheel past the old mine, at the base in the parking lot before you go to the right and head up to that tower, is another uphill trail to the left...the "hunter's trail"...that my 1998 stock TJ Sahara would sometimes get stuck in the snow...even in 4-LOW!
Its hit or miss when the County will open the gates to both trails (maybe based on hunting season) but again...this was 10 years ago...things may have changed
IMHO...not a lot of good "legal" wheeling in Westchester County NY
I want to hook up a Northern Westchester/Putnam County JEEP CRAWL...but need a few weekends to organize this...Lets do this!
BTW, my JEEP is getting its 1st service at 3034 miles, dropped it off tonight for a oil change... courtesy of JEEPS free "Maintenance Program"

Do you mean the stretch of unpaved road that goes around the south end of the resevoir from Croton Dam road all the way to the DEP station?
If the latter, then I go there all the time whenever I go pick up my wife who's a teacher in Yorktown. I call it the 'scenic' route

Anyone in Westchester (or surrounding) trim their fenders?
I just picked up an extra set of fenders and want to put them under the knife, but would like assistance from an experienced person.

a 4-6 hour block of uninterupted time to pull the electrics and install the Benchmark dual battery tray.Here's the poser photo with the chopped fenders now finished with the edging strip.

Is this the one that starts (or ends) at the huge parking lot at the bottom of the dam? I thought that was a part of the Croton Aquaduct trail which does not allow motorized, non-official vehicles.

Yes to the 'scenic' route (heads from the top of Croton Dam/Aqueduct trail towards the DEP station and 'Thunder Bridge')
It’s a shame that’s about the best 'legal' wheeling in Northern Westchester County (at least that I'm aware of)
Today would be a great day to be out on that route.

Westchester, I think youre the only one around here that has chopped fenders. Do you have a sawzall or cutoff wheel? I've got a dremel and some bits and thinking that it'd be kinda hard cutting through the brace underneath with a dremel.
