I agree with you, DIY is definitely the way to go (less $ spent on labor == more $ for mods! + knowhow to fix when it breaks on the trail). Eventually (after my stock Rubi tires wear) I plan on upgrading to 35's or 37's (already trimmed my fenders in prep - now i just got to wait 20k miles :P). I'm confident that I could probably install a lift on my own (given enough time, and a helping hand), but if did go with 37's i'm thinking i'd need to regear+sleeve+gusset - which i'm not sure is DIY'able at my current level of expertise (eg. no welding experience). Heck I even called around for welding classes, but they all seem to be tech schools on a M-F, 9-5 sched. But even if I stayed with 35's&4.1, after my install I'd want a shop to inspect/correct my work (if needed).
IMO 35s and 4.10s are fine to run with, had mine 2years. Going with 37s and then re-gearing, and upgraded brakes, gusseting or new axles are a whole new '$$,$$$' ball game. I do not regret getting 35s, but admit have thought of skipping over 37s and going 40s but $ for new axles needed first.

The family and I are going to be going to Niagara Falls, NY for a few days. We wanted to know if theres any place in that area for wheeling to do some off road. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Just bringing this back to life. Live in Ossining.
I am a newbie and my JK is all stock. I really don't know the first thing about off roading and wouldn't want to do anything crazy but I want to ease into it.
2008 2-door - black - hard top at the moment but just ordered my soft top so I am prepared for the nice weather (whenever that happens)
It would be nice to meet some people in the area, too.

Wow, thanks for reviving this, got to see my JK how it grew in the last 16 months.
I'm in the Bronx and I go to Rausch Creek occasionally, about a 3 hour drive, usually stay over night. Also go wheeling with some Jersey guys, great bunch of guys, about 45 minutes away.
You would be surprised at how capable your stock JK is, especially if you air down your tires and disconnect your sway bar. Keep your eyes open for the next Jersey crew run.

Yeah, I can't really afford to get non-street tires at the moment. I just got Coopers and they definitely are made for highway only. Don't want to wreck them.
I love the idea of having fun with my Jeep but everything is so expensive. It blows.

welcome. I've wheeled with tib a couple times now (and maybe 1-2 other times not having met formally!). definitely a fun time. parts can get pricey but IMO paying dealers is more so.
FYI. jersey trails are easy and still fun even stock with street tires (min chance of damage)... besides getting stuck is half the fun!
