My typical flow is to check the new post link to sort through recently updated threads. There are always some threads that come up as results that I don't really care about, but that will continue to return as results unless I open them so they system sees that I've visited the thread and that there are no new entries since. Is there some way that I could check boxes and essentially "dismiss" those particular threads from appearing in my new "new post" search? I haven't seen anything that is obvious.
For example, and not to pick on anyone's thread, I'm thinking check boxes like this and from the drop down "dismiss" so that next time I click "new posts" I don't see these at all, unless of course someone has posted something new in the threads.

To answer your question, there is no such feature available.
That typically means either A)Re-write the core or B)Plugin to incorporate the feature. A Re-write of the core isn't trivial and plugins are generally avoided due to security and scale issues - especially on large boards. That's if one even exists, which I'm not aware of. We listen to feedback and when it appears there is a case (and it's doable) features are added or altered over time.
The way the system keeps track of this is a bit complex. On this site, it's database and time based. You mark a thread as read and it's recorded in the database so it "syncs" with your other devices and subsequent log ins. Everything after X amount of days is scratched and considered read. Otherwise the data would get out of control. Technically, some of the framework is already there in regard to your inquiry. You'd simply short-cut by directly submitting read status to threads via the inline check tool rather than they be marked as they're opened. I say simply but it's still not all that simple because it still requires cutting into the core of the software and putting that code in.
Perhaps somewhat on topic. There is no user interface to do this, however, you can exclude or include certain forums in your New Post search if you bookmark the link with the appropriate forum ids.
