Colorado Winter Road Trip. Worth it?
This is a question for the CO peeps.
My family is going to be in Colorado Springs for the holidays, and I was considering taking the Jeep. Is it even really possible to hit many trails with the winter conditions? The most I've even played in before is a foot of snow. If I'm only really able to hit the streets to explore I probably won't take the Jeep.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Ryan

I played around a little on the trails off of Rampart Range Rd. near the Springs this weekend. The USFS was even kind enough to mark some of the trails with big red signs that said "4x4 only." I think it was meant as a warning, but I took it as an invitation. We had a lot of fun. I say do it.
You can go off road in the winter, but you need to go prepared to spend the night. I hit a trail off Rampart Range last year on mothers day and encountered 6" to 2'+ of snow. Winched out 5 times before getting out. You should have at least one buddy, and in reality it should be a 3+ for redundancy purposes.
Bring tire chains
Lockers Front and Rear
Winch
Recovery kit with winch extension line
Have fun and be safe!

Well pretty much everything is snowed in pretty good in the mountains. You can wheel the trails but most are too deep to bash through yourself. Usually if we get a snow run together we make sure to make it a big run with 10+ rigs to be safe.
If I wasn't busy during the holidays I'd head up with you.
I'd say it's your call man, be ready to winch, slide on ice, and bring a shovel!!
Wheeling season is usually put to a hold here from dec-may with a few runs in between here and there.

We always carried food and water for at least 3 days along with 0° or better sleeping bags and Sterno in addition to standard gear in the. Western CO mountains. You will have fun, take at least 1 other vehicle and be prepared
Thanks for the info guys.
That was the response I was kind of expecting. I'm locked F/R on 35's and have a winch and recovery gear, but I'd be solo. I'd love to drive the Jeep anyways, but just not worth the wear on the MTR's if I'm not wheeling.
I have a big trip in the planning stages for Ouray and thereabouts in the late summer next year, and I'm maybe getting too excited too early, haha.

I am interested in the OP's question as well. I have time off now to get up to CO but figured the weather would make it the worst time. Is everything worth doing snowed in or are there some trails that will still be managable. Planning on going with my JK sport LSD-rear 35's but bring a buddy along with a Rubi, 35's and winch.
