Hey guys i'm kinda new to Denver (end of december), and I had a lifted Xterra that i used to run with some JK's down in Florida.... but i totaled it a few weeks ago (ice on Squaw pass rd), and i'm seriously considering a Jk, but i have some questions...

1. unlimited... not "in love" with the 4 door, but would be nice to have... how are they on the trail?

2. Soft top? Colorado winters... are they warm enough, or do i need a hard top?

3. Talk me into a JK.. (i want one, but i also love the convenience of a truck with a bed..)

Do you have kids?
I love my 4dr but wish I had a 2dr also. I think the 4 dr is better off-road from my past jeeps. It seems to make everything easier.

I like the hard top for security. but the softie is totally fine. If you live downtown I would go hard top.

Get a stick with a hitch. Buy a 5x8 trailer and you will never need a truck again.

Buy a jeep and you will meet new people and get a hobbie. Millions of things to get into and Chicks dig jeeps.
Get a truck and you get a truck.

depends on the trail, sometimes a long wheel base is advantageous, sometimes a shorter wheel base is better...

2. Soft top? Colorado winters... are they warm enough, or do i need a hard top?

plenty warm, like any car it's cold in the morning, but once the heater get's crankin you're fine

3. Talk me into a JK.. (i want one, but i also love the convenience of a truck with a bed..)

then get a 4 door and lay down the back seats

...I've been out here from FL as well for almost 5 years, seems to me a Jeep is "the vehicle" to have in Colorado...

...oh and welcome to the land of dry air and no mosquitos (well, depending where you live)

I have had my 2dr for 3 years now and in all those 3 years and wheeling in 5 states across the rockies and mid-west I've yet to find a situation where the 4dr wouldn't be better. I'm always wheeling with them and its always easier for them. Hands down the 4dr is better. The 2dr is classier though, and I love it. I plan on having both at some point. The only place I've seen my 2dr do better is on one staircase obstacle in Moab and on tight switchbacks.

Both - if you can get them both because its a) cheaper to get them both up front and b) handy to have both. Just make sure you have the room to store the hard top when not in use.

I had a Dodge 3/4ton and my JK for the last year but recently sold my Dodge before moving to Colorado. I love having a truck too, but overall I find there are few tasks that I truly need a truck for besides moving large oversize objects. In which case you can find someone with a truck or get a trailer. While the JK doesn't have a huge towing capacity it has enough to do what you need in general.

Also be sure your kids college funds are tucked away because you'll want to liquidate them in order to put new stuff into your Jeep.

Having a Jeep and a JK for that matter are by far the coolest vehicle in America and the community revolving around it is better than any other you'll find.
