Default Ouray CO run in Sept but dont want to wheel alone

I last wheeled out west in 2008 in Moab and now want to go to Colorado in early September but I don't want to wheel alone.

The target is Ouary as it sounds like some great trails out there.

If I show up over Labor Day week are there places where one can find others to wheel with or am I better off waiting another week and joining the Jeep Jamboree. I really don't want to do the Jamboree as it seems to be a lot of money for guiding on what are supposed to be well marked trails. But I have never been there so maybe I am wrong.

Dates are still very flexible.

There is no specific trail list, but I just want to go see the mountains and play with the Rubi.

Thanks in advance for any information you can share.

Cheers
Don

We will be up in that area towards the end of Sept for the colors..
The trails have people on them all summer so even if you start out alone you will pass and be passed by people, jeeps, ATV's, dirt bikes.... etc.
you could probably even wait at the trial heads and create small groups.. nothing out of Ouray is really that technical. The wall on Poughkeepsie gulch might be the most technical in the area and if you have a spotter with you and look it over closely you will not have much troubles, there are also winch points to help if needed.. if it rains heavily there are some trails that will become very slippery.. Red Mtn pass is one of them.. best to run them in the morning early afternoon anyhow.. check out traildamage.com if you hven't yet...
have fun.
post the weekend you go... one never knows when a on the moment weekend might drag me up there again..
headed up there next weekend and then again in late July so maybe I'll get in Black Bear pass before Sept's trip

Is Black Bear pass as bad as some folks say it is? Or is is just the switchbacks and being so close to the edge?

Plus is there an unofficial meet up area to try and find folks to wheel with?

I am going to be there the week after Labor Day.
Thanks
Don

I haven't done Black Bear yet, we will be doing it the end of July, but for what I see on youtube videos it's mainly the first part call the steps. Then some very tight switch backs. You could always do corkscrew pass first to get an idea of some tight switchbacks.
You should watch some youtube videos of it.
here's a pretty good video of it

I'll update you again after we do it.

We are headed up spending the night in lake city aug 29 and then doing southern half of alpine loop before heading to ridgeway and ultimately over owl creek pass to west fork.

If anyone wants to join up for the alpine loop let me know. We'll run it on the 30th.

Not a technical trail. If you don't like shelf roads then where it drops down to the waterfall and then up to the first switchback you won't be happy. If you don't mine shelf roads then enjoy the scenery!
