Default Question about Black Bear Road

I'm leaving next Sat for Colorado. We're going to do some wheeling and camping. I'd like to try Black Bear Road. Can anyone tell me if the rain will make it too slick or has anyone been through there lately? A few years ago it was shut down for rock and mudslides. I haven't heard anything lately about it. I'd appreciate any information or tips from those of you who have been down it. Thanks.

I don't think rain would be a problem as long as it isn't some sort of monsoon. If anything, it will make the waterfall that much better.

Black Bear should be OK. The local 4x4 group did it yesterday and I haven't heard anything bad about their trip. Honestly though, while Black Bear gets all the press, Poughkeepsie Gulch to Hurricane Pass, or Corkscrew is much more challenging and far more beautiful. The turn off to it is about 10 miles or so further down the road toward Ouray. The Wall will kick your butt if it's wet, but there are winch points at the top and always someone around to lend a hand. Plus, when was the last time you got stuck in the snow in late July?

I passed on the Black Bear run to do Poughkeepsie yesterday. It was raining pretty good, but was still an outstanding trail ride. Here are a few teaser picts for you.

That is some nice scenery. I might try and to to Poughkeepsie too. A friend is going along with us too. He's taking his expedition, which has good tires and a winch. Would Poughkeepsie and Corkscrew be something he could do too?

Thanks for the information.

A winch'll get him there, just take the more level way up to the left. I'd be more concerned about that long thing on those switchbacks on Black Bear. Of course Corkscrew has some sharp switchbacks too, but you can take Hurricane Pass instead which is every bit as beautiful (although a touch more civilized) than Corkscrew.
