There are plenty of areas to check out. Wash park is a fantastic area. If you looking for something still youthful... Check out the capital hill area. There's a lot of awesome things to do there. One of the great things is the "light rail". That thing can take you from downtown-shopping-colfax( bunch of bars) and all around. If I were to move back I'd go for something off of I-25. There are a bunch of cool little spots and decent areas there with plenty to do.

 

If I had a family I would move a little out of the center, but it's only my wife and I, late 20's so I love cap hill. We bike. Every place spring and summer and down town is blocks away. It's a safe area for the most part as long as you don't make stupid decision late at night

 

I'm jealous. I lived in Colorado a few years back on the western slope for work and its beautiful there. I would love to go back one day.
