Klr 650. Have had 3 of them over the years. Great on and off road.

My buddy is letting me borrow his crf for the rest of the season and I wouldn't buy one myself. His has a programmer on it and it's still a turd.. Can't even wheelie in second gear, and BARELY in first..

Ktm does know how to make a bike from everything I've read/seen.. My only concern is the hefty maintenance schedule needed on them compared to something like a drz or a wrr..

My only concern with the klrs and the xr650s is the weight. I enjoy playing on dirt bike trails and the 650s are probably a hassle to flick around when it's needed..

The XR wouldn't be so bad but the KLR is too heavy for serious off road. I went from the KLR to the DRZ and it was night and day. I only went to the KTM 'cause I'm a motorhead and like to do wheelies in third gear. It is better off road than the DRZ as well but the DRZ can get me most places.

Truthfully, I picked up some Honda Ruckus scooters for cheap and pretty much dual sported the shit out of them. Then picked up a Drz400s and loved it but wanted longer freeway rides and got sick of lugging fuel cans or planning gas every 100 miles. Changed to a klr650. Was great for freeway but hated it on anything but a hard packed fire road. It is too top heavy at the gas tank. Plus I hated its looks from day 1. Got rid of that and now ride a husky 610 supermoto. Obviously not dual sport anymore but I may buy dirt tires and it slides around dirt roads still like a mother. Out of all, the Drz was prob the bike I should have kept and just bought supermoto wheels for. Valves need to be adjusted pretty frequently but easy maintenance bike and parts readily available on the road. ...get the DRZ. ...Anything under 400cc aren't even an option it you even want to ride short distances on the highway between roads. The Drz revs high at 70mph but still comfortable during a 2 hour trip down highway 101 Click image for larger version
