We have a travelall pet barrier for our 2 Siberian huskies to keep them in the back of my wife's jku. It was spendy but is awesome in my opinion

Our dog hasn't been in the JK a lot since he tried to jump out when we were going 10 mph while tied to a leash. Scared the crap outta me. Now he rides in the back seat with someone to keep an eye on him at all times

I cant keep my dog out of the back of my Unlimited. If I leave the back windows down or the top off he just jumps in the back window even with the door closed and will hang out there all day waiting to go someplace. He gets super sad if I tell him he has to get out of the Jeep. I pretty much take him everywhere with me other then work. I usually keep a 4 inch thick memory foam mattress in the back with a duvet cover over it that is easy to clean. Then toss a few pillows back there and he is happy as a clam. I tether their harness to the center of the roll bar, that way they have play room but cant get all the way out.

He was just a little guy in this picture but he is pushing 75+ now. I use a Champion K9 outfitters harness and belt strap. They make some really quality stuff. I just attach it to a back seat loop for my 2dr (seat out). Gives him room to walk around the back but keeps him securely in the tub. Super strong I would not be worried about my dog at all in an accident or roll with him secured appropriately with this.
