Gps
Ok so here's a question....Is there a good handheld unit that shows offroad trails. In example when I went to Moab last year. I and a couple guys went out on our own on a trial (were not from there) and I have the Charles Wells book but we got lost because it told us to look for some mushroom rock and turn there..Well us not being from Moab had no idea what the hell rock it was since all the rocks look the same.
My garmen GPS showed nothing but blank screen once we got off the highway..So is there a handheld that I could buy and download Moab trail maps and just follow that???? OR can anyone give me an idea on what I could do to be able to lead a group of us (not from the area) without getting lost...

I've been looking into this as well. Garmin sells a few handhelds with topo maps preloaded. I believe that these have some of the trails listed on them. There are a few different models: Colorago, Oregon, and something else. There is also the Nuvi 500 (topo) which is more auto than handheld.
I have not used any of these, I've just been researching so far.

Buy a handheld (I have the Garmin 60CSx loaded with the SW Topo Maps) and get the Wells Moab Book. Then just load the wayponts into your GPS for whatever trails you want to do. The topo map I use have most all the trails in and around Moab....
I bought the Delorme PN-40. I am running the Delorme Topo Software on my Mac using Windows XP (Bootcamp) and so far I am impressed. There is a slightly larger learning curve from what I've heard compared to the Garmins, but it seems pretty straight forward.
I have never owned a handheld GPS before, so I looked around the net for the comparisons and from what I saw the Delorme PN-40 and Delorme software had the most to offer.
You might want to check out all the youtube videos for the two units. The Delorme seems much more impressive as far as speed and owner satisfaction.
TonyT.

Since my PN40 has been the best GPS I have owned and proven to be very durable and has the best Maps, This new one WILL BE purchased , this is great, Finding my buddies and able to send personable text messages instead of preprogrammed messages long distances will make the adventure even better not having to worry about my buds

Delorme has really stepped up to provide a great tool for riding off-road
'gpx' tracks on the SD card YEAH, able to load them at any time without a PC Double YEAH!, (The PN-60w will read GPX files from the SD card as well as internal memory, allowing virtually unlimited waypoints, tracks, and maps. )
So on can load thousands of trails to the Sd card and load only the ones you want, and no PC needed to load and view them on the handheld
Cant wait
