GPS recommendation...
I am looking for a different GPS for my Jeep. I currently have a Magellan Maestro 4050 that I bounce between vehicles and works great for travelling on the road when you have information on an address. My problem comes where this does not have the ability to plot points which really sucks when off roading in unmarked areas making it more challanging to backtrack or see your plotted route in the woods and such. Just trying to do some research on a new GPS and looking for recommendations before I buy something.
I just got this one, https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=327 off eBay for $155, including shipping. I have downloaded to it my closest OHV area (Wharton State Forest in NJ), in topo format (so I can see the fire roads & trails) from their Garmin MapSource software. The software is expensive (like 60 - 100 bucks), but the unit is great so far. The screen is on the small side, but it's meant to be a hand held unit as well, for hiking etc & the acquisition time for it to pick up satellites is a little long. Otherwise, I really like it so far. I have only played with it around town, but I'll be testing thoroughly it in the woods this weekend.
I'll keep ya posted...

If you're going wheelin this weekend you can see my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx in action. I use it for geocaching and it will also record my route and allow me to enter waypoints. I also have the topo map software. I love it!

Nice to meet up with everyone that weekend. Even though I ended up buying my Garmin before we went I am glad that I purchased it. The Garmin GPSmap 60CSx is a pretty good GPS. Now only if I can keep it away from my brother, kids and brother-in-law that have me running all over Geocaching till they buy one of their own...lol
Nice meeting up with you and your son and learning about your setup. My Garmin GPSmap 60CSx seems to work great now that I have learned a little more about how to use it. My brother-in-law loves Geocaching now and ended up getting my brother involved, so now I have bug them for my GPS back and run around with them finding the millions of caches around the area till they get one of their own...lol
Hey!
Not Handheld but very useful...
-Laptop (preferably Netbook - you know the 9-10" laptops)
-60$ USB GPS: ht tp://www.canadagps.com/BU-353spec.html
-Google Earth: Free
-Earth Bridge: Free
With this setup you have actual environmental coverage of the surrounding grounds...
You can see exactly where you are on the Satellite photos, etc.
It makes "way points" while you roll so you have the real path you took, and you can easily go back if you missed the trail exit or something, etc...
I like the fact that you see the real stuff. Not a map or some picture not to scale.
It's even equal to (if not better than) a topo map because you really see the mountain rather than some round lines...
I never wheel without my setup and it got us out of the woods more than once!
