impressions of Garmin TrailGuide
I scored it on ebay for $370 with shipping, brand new in the box. Wish I knew the story behind it.
It took about 30 minutes to install the setup. My only f'up was dropping a screw into the void of the center console. I'm a big fan of GPS and use a touch screen gps unit everyday while at work.
noted so far:
PROs:
-looks great, much better than anything that you suction cup to the windshield
-I like the way it list your current direction and the road your traveling on across the top of the screen
-tons of poi and customizable options
-map software could be useful if planning a big trip, updates/support online
-bright no glare screen
-serious portability with 20 hours of battery life outside of vehicle
-speakers on dash mount are loud and very clear
-plug for external antenna
-when spliced into the driver's side plug it powers off and on with the vehicle adding to the units built-in feel
CONS:
-slow start up, almost 2 minutes to acquire satellites and begin displaying info seems like the units processor is taxed sometime
-no touchscreen, useful in a auto unit but not a big deal overall
-the unit shows its age with an external antenna
-screen is a bit small, although when mounted it seems fine
-no way it is worth $600-$700
I'll get a pic up soon, if only for myself.
