The clock spring is a ribbon of wire that carries the signal from the buttons on the steering wheel to components that need the signal. It is a coil so it can wind and unwind with the steering wheel being turned. The coild looks like a wind-up clock spring, thus the name. The wires are thin to reduce bulk but there is a lot of stress from winding and unwinding so it is susceptible to failure.

Well, I'm officially out this time. After a couple nights of driveway shop light surgery, I got the front bumper done, but found an issue with the exhuast hitting the new back bumper and I think I may have a shock or spring issue on the rear passenger side. With the major weather change (52 yesterday, 15 and heavy snow today), no way I'm going to get at those. I'll get everything fixed up and be ready for the next run.
