Question Battle Creek, MI information

I might be relocating to Battle Creek for a few years. Rather than telling me not to, any information folks familiar with the area can share would be greatly appreciated. I've read up on some stats and see the crime rate is still rather high, along with unemployment. So information I would like is where can someone live with lower crime rates? I'd probably just buy a 2nd home rather than renting but might not. It seems houses are insanely cheap and a mortgage would be half what rent is and potential for equity. Considering prices I've seen online and the fact it will be a second home for me, I'm figuring on about $150k.

Another thing I must consider is the mrs. Obviously she'd like to be near some decent shopping. Nothing extravagant but at least a standard mall without having to be fearful of the neighborhood when she's alone. Moderately decent restaurants would be a bonus, too.

No kids so schools do not matter. I could probably do a 30 minute commute, maybe up to 40-45 for the right location. Also, given the horrible winter weather, are they pretty good about maintaining the roads? I'm an avid snowboarder and see all the nearby options are pretty tiny compared to what I am used to. So I have accepted that already but what is the best option from that area? I'd like something I could go to/from in the same day (not have to stay overnight).

Thanks, in advance, for any information!
