Default The dreaded Windshield Crack...

Almost made it a year! But, the inevitable happened. A rock hit the upper corner of my windshield and sent a crack right across my field of vision.

Called the insurance and my deductible was $500! Changed it so for all future incidentals it will be $0.

Called Safe-lite, $515 for OEM glass, $370 for aftermarket
Called Guardian Glass, $260 for aftermarket
Called ABRA $215 for aftermarket

Placed the call this morning at 10am. Within an hour the guy was in the parking lot at my work and it is already replaced. From my initial inspection, everything looks great.

Yep, if you have a jeep, you need glass protection! Luckily mine was only a chip that was easily fixed. It happened to me after just 3 months!

I went with safelite for my aftermarket replacement. Total installed was just under $300. Did a half ass job cleaning the broken glass but I'm sure everywhere is different for quality.

What auto insurance do you have? I have State Farm and to my understanding, the auto glass people have contracts with the insurance companies to discount the price for policy holders.

You live and you learn, then you get no deductible for comprehendsive! I am still experiencing the growing pains of having a nice vehicle...

Have 2 chips now. My comprehensive coverage has always been 0$ deductible. Reason? My land rover went through 6 windshields at $1300 each (with heating element). Yeah, Allstate was not happy. I recently had safe lite repair a chip. cost me nothing but the fix was shit. I got another chip, bought the repair kit and did it myself, it is better than the safe
It'd repair. Next chip, getting a new windscreen.

I believe I went through three windshields the first two years. I stopped putting a decal across the top and haven't had any problems since

Man. That's crazy unfortunate for all you guys. My $100 a month geico policy cost me $25 for a windshield replacement (even with the fancy jeep inlay), and I never even specified getting extra coverage when I got it

Did auto glass repair 25+ years trained and certified lots of guys and will say there is squat for talent when it comes to repairs. Too many cut /corners or want the replacement there's more money in it for just a smidge more time.

#1- if you get a chip in any car withing 4" of the frit band (black band surrounding glass) get ot fixed make sure they use a thick resin its a high stress area due to flex and expansion when glass gets hot

#2- if you carry a really low deductable a lot of shops will cover the deductible.

#3- if you have an unrepaired chip avoid parking in direct sunlight the glass will expand, do not. Change the temp fast like cold water on hot glass, do not push on glass and yes wheeling will flex body of vehicle which flexes the window frame....urethane holds at 500psi so even though it flexes it can hold strong enough and. Cause it to crack-

#4- do not fill it with nail polish lol saw this ALOT.....or scribe a line thinking it will stop a crack.

#5- star chips don't fill as easy as bullseye or crescent breaks so the kits from the store usually don't fill star breaks as well and they use thin resin to allow it to flow better which is OK but doesn't hold high stress breaks as well...

#6- most auto glass shops with bill the insurance company on the break, so it costs you nothing and the insurance will waive your deductible and not raise rates....

So there's some tips for you guys, don't know that you want em but if they help you or someone else save a few bucks and or keep a piece of glass intact then right on...
