Default Road tripping from Indiana to Boundary Waters

Heading up to the Boundary Waters of MN for a class over Memorial weekend. I'm looking for any info on some fun places to stop, or any 'interesting' detours.

I plan on going Chicago to Rockford to Madison one day after work. Then Madison towards Eau Claire then towards the Twin Cities, on to Duluth then Grand Marais. Same route back a few days later.

Any ideas?

Ely Minnesota is a neat little town. What you really should do is spend some time in Duluth as there is a lot to see there related to shipping and Lake Superior. Then head up to Grand Marais on the North Shore road. Stop at Split Rock lighthouse, which is one of the most scenic lighthouses you will ever see. The waterfront in Duluth has a lot to see and do by the aerial lift bridge.

I grew up in Northern Minnesota.

Have a great trip!
