I've got one like that (Russian M44) and an M38 (no bayonet), but never had the urge to get the longer M91/30. Shoots pretty good but has more kick than the M91/30.

I had a Nagant a couple years ago. It was good for the money. For a cheap WW2 rifle I am really fond of K98's. 8mm is hard to come by but I found the rear sight elevation adjustment was more true with the K98 out to 600yds

This rifle reminds me that movie Enemy at the Gates and when the officer gave the soldiers just a handful of rifles and ammo to everyone. When the soldiers asked how they could shoot without a rifle the officer told them to get rifles from the dead soldiers. Based on what I read about the Russian front I believe situations like that were not uncommon.

There's that old proverb:
A while back boat were wood and men were steel
Then boat became steel and men wood
Nowadays both are plastic
Cannot generalize, but the stuff those guys went through would be unimaginable nowadays.

Love the Mosins. I had a M91/30 that I picked up for $50 a couple years ago. I cut the barrel down to 18", and reshaped the stock with a dremel tool to M91/59 dimensions. Removed the rear sight base and put a scout-style pistol scope on it. Tons of fun to shoot. Took a deer and a couple hogs with it using Barnaul SP ammo. I'll see if I can find a pic.
