Default Rifle scope?

My bro has a Marlin .338 MXLR lever action.
It's his B-day today so was going to pick up a scope. I don't know much if anything about them. Any suggestions on what I should get or look for? It'll probably be used mostly for moose and caribou hunting.

I've got a Nikon and I love it. Never once had a problem with it.

Thanks for the link. Something I hadn't considered before.
Sportsman's Warehouse seems to favor the Leupolds- it's what most of their stock consists of.
Checking out Nikon with the BDC reticle now before running out to the store.

I'm looking at getting a Nikon for about $165 for my rifle soon. Real soon, rifle season opens Saturday. I hear good things about those little Nikons.

Will the moose and caribou be hanging out in thicker woods nearby, or in far off fields?

For caribou at least, most likely in wide open areas. Moose is 50/50 as they like to munch mostly in the wooded areas-- you can shoot pretty much a few feet from the road though during moose season in most places..

I ended up getting him the Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 Riflescope with the BDC retical. It seems to have good reviews and got it cheaper than on Amazon. They have a promo going on now-- you buy their scopes and you can send in for a free camera.....not the best in the budget class...but hey- it's free.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think he'll be happy with it. I think a good 3-9x scope is perfect for most hunting in the US.

I probably would have stuck with the Leupold, but I know the Nikons are getting pretty popular. There must be a reason. I have a Nikon spotting scope that I really like. I put it up against my buddy's Leupold spotting scope and we both agreed it was clearer. So Nikon is using some good glass as well.
