What Pistol do you carry daily?

I am about to get my CHL, and I want to get a carry piece. I was going to get a glock G36 (the slim single stack .45) but I really want a gun with a hammer. I don't have anything against glock, and I keep a G21 (the full sized 13+1rd .45) in my Jeep most of the time. Well this gun is way too big to carry except when wearing heavy winter clothing. I also have a keltec P32 with the 10rd mag for the hot summer days and shorts.

I need something in between. Guns I am thinking about: a Sig P229 in .357sig, Sig P220 carry, Sig P239 in .357sig, USP compact in .357sig, or maybe even the P30.... The P229 in .357 is my first choice, but I am worried about size and weight for concealed carry. Anyone packing one?

What do you guys carry? Why do you carry what you carry?

you carry a .44mag daily? You must a big dude? What does it have.... a 6" barrel? You my friend are Dirty Harry aren't you?

falconfixer 08-15-2009 11:20 PM

No I jest a little bit. I don't "carry" it on me but it's in the Jeep with me. I got a hip carrier when I go off into the woods looking for blueberries tho. Fucking bears can be a bitch. Oh and its a shorty so no grouping at distance but I'm just looking to knock a meth head or bear down with this.

Sig SP2022. Very light weight 40 cal. I don't carry dailey but when I travel it fits perfect in my consol of my Jeep. When ever I am in the the woods or anything of that nature I bought the cloth holster with reversable cllip for either side and the pocket for the extra clip. Honestly you pretty much forget its there.

Your going to get all kinds of answers but let me add this. If you are going to carry every day the most important thing is the holster. If it is to uncomfortable you will quite wearing and just leave your gun in the jeep. Please take a look at this brand. http://www.mitchrosen.com/

https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/atta...1&d=1250518597

I like this one, the ARG. I wore the same one with my Berretta 96 (.40cal) for eight years and when I got my last carry 2 years ago I immediately ordered one for it. They are custom made per each model gun. Read about them they work in conjunction with the Mitch Rosen belt, it stays where you put. Also, and this is very important in a hot climate, you only need to have your shirt out of you pants to hide it. The holsters are fine American craftsmanship and there are none better.

You asked so.... Kimber 1911 CDPII (CDP= custom defense package) Pic is from Kimber site.
https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/atta...1&d=1250518597

I like a "full" size gun, small ones just don't fit my hand.
I like to have knock down power. On a battle field who ever put out the most ammo wins. In a self defense scenario every shot counts. It is my belief, however misguided it may be, if you are in a situation that takes over 8 shots you don’t need to be there. And yes if you read the specs of the fatory mag it holds 7 but I bought mags that holds 8.

If you already have the G21, then think about the G30. It is smaller and it still accepts the G21 magazines, accessories and holsters.

I am all about interchangeability.

I have all 3 Glock .45acp pistols, as well as all three sizes of 1911 and I find that the G30 turned into my constant companion. Been carrying it now for 10 years and have learned to love it.

There are times, when I am in shorts or just don't want to wear a cover garment, when I slip one of my .357 snubbies into a pocket holster. Makes it really convenient if you have to just step out for a minute too!

Robar 08-16-2009 07:08 AM

I carry either a sig P220 or a Glock 36. I really like both, but I have no real desire to have an exposed hammer I'll use them either way. I would like to also get a Glock 30 some day too.

Colt Commander in a Milt Sparks Summer Special 2
+1 to the commander in a Summer Special II. I usually tote this one. Dan Wesson CBOB .45 (they also make a 10mm). It's been a fantastic pistol so far. Good 1911s are hard to beat in my book. I've done the hi capacity plastic thing, and while they do have their place, I will probably never go back after being bitten by the 1911 bug.

I love & carry the Glock 26 9mm on my person.

I also keep a Glock 19 9mm in the Jeep.

My wife & I use both guns, and are both very comfortable with them.

Ball point ammo for target practice is cheap and we use Federal 124 gr. Hydra-Shock hollow points for the carry ammo.

We love it!!! :yup::thumbsup:

Lots of great info. Thanks guys. I meant to ask also what you guys had for holsters as well, and where/ how you carry? Those mitchrosen holsters are very nice. Thanks for taking the time to respond everyone. Right now I am kicking myself for not getting a kimber for $600 back in the day. I swear this shop used to sell new kimbers for $600 (back in like 2000) and they were not stripped down models either. I love the 1911. I think you guys are just making my choice harder. Now I want a sig, hk, 1911, couple more glocks, m9..... the list never ends.

After 23 years of CCW I now carry a small Ruger LCP .380. I started out way back with a full size 9mm S&W 439 and slowly down sized the pistol.

Tactics win gunfights.

Sig P239 .40. Great gun, 7+1 Capacity, great accuracy for a sub-compact, easy to cary and handle.

I picked one of those up for $75 a few months back. It's a cool little gun to throw in the safe and mess around with on the range every so often, but I can't even hit center mass from 3 yards with the darn thing. Not to mention it fits akwardly in your hand.

To add some input to the OP's question; I typically carry a Taurus PT145 Pro or a Rossi 357 Mag. The Taurus is perfect for IWB carry, and has a rather small profile for a 10 +1 .45ACP. I think it offers a great value as well, being that it can be had for ~$399.

I have learned a few things from this thread.... Jeep guys are often gun guys. You guys have some pretty good taste in guns. All this thread has done is make me want more guns. It hasn't narrowed anything down. Looks like lots of sig and 1911 love, anyone think the steel frame is too heavy for everyday carry? I guess not considering how many of you guys are packing steel frames.

abock33 08-17-2009 04:22 PM

I carry a glock 23 in a Crossbreed Supertuck IWB holster. I have also carried a Gov. model 1911in a Galco summer comfort. But Imho the crossbreed holster is way more comfortable than any other IWB holster I've worn.

ClaytonT 08-17-2009 04:43 PM

Glock 21.

But I'd also like something more easily concealed.

...Oh wait, I forgot I now live in New Jersey. I don't carry a gun. I don't even own a gun. I don't know any gun toting nuts either. Hell, I don't even know what a gun looks like...:dontknow2:

Let us know what you pick! I forgot to look at your location, but if you're here in NJ, you know that you can only buy one handgun a month now, right? Of course after you buy a purchase permit. :sad2:

Very nice.

Good to see someone use that EB for what it was designed to do.

You can always go with an alloy frame gun. That is if you do not carry a plastic frame gun and the steel is too heavy for you. Alloy is lighter than the steel but, the plastic is lighter than the alloy.

I personally like the polymer guns (Glock) for personal carry. The lighter weight is one of the reasons.

There's pros & cons with all this stuff so, you have to just do all the math & see what YOU are most comfortable with.

Not only "comfortable", but along with that, what are you good with "tatically" & "accurately". :yup:

All 3 of these are VERY IMPORTANT, when making your overall decision!!! :yup:

Remember....."Guns are not suppose to be comfortable, they're suppose to be comforting!!!" :yup::thumbsup:

Most important is a good belt. 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 wide and 1/4 inch thick, 2 ply leather. Whatever the loops on your pants will allow. Skinny 1" dress belts to not hold the gun to your body. Second is carry IWB The Milt Sparks is suede on the outside and slick on the inside. The suede outside will cling to your shirt and pants further stabilizing the gun.

Jeeps and guns go together because the outdoors type of person, male and female alike, frequently have need of both.

bigbluejk 08-19-2009 08:40 AM

I was really leaning toward a USP compact, but now I am leaning more toward a Sig or even a 1911. I am def. going to spend some cash on a good holster.

I have seen some guys carry in the wasteband of their pants, but on their hip. That does not seem like it would feel very good? What position are you guys carrying your pistols in? I have a holster for my G21 that is like a sleeve that hangs it inside the back of my pants, and I have a cheap shoulder rig. I will be buying a quality holster (and aparantly belt) for this gun.

Your wear on your strong side. The belt is the exact size fit so the holster stays where you put it. I wear this model just in front of my right rear pocket. Wear an inch or 2 larger waist band pants. Outside the waist is more comfortable but we are talking the ultimate conceal. I do have a crossdraw western holster for when I ride a horse or ATV with my S&W 686 but that is a different topic.

The design of the holster levers the gun handle into your side (not uncomfortable). Really with only a shirt out someone looking at you can not tell you are carrying. I carried a double stack .40 cal for years. The 1911 single stack has an extremely thin handle and works well with this design.

The 1911 is America's favorite pistol for a reason. John Browning was a genius. period. I love and appreciate a lot of guns but I have a "special" love for my single action auto piece of art.

Your looking at $260 for holster and belt.

tx-skydiver 08-20-2009 11:14 AM

I carry a Glock 27 (.40 ca.). Its a compact model and conceals well with shirt untucked with a form-fitting leather side holster made specifically fo that model.

If I cannot conceal comfortable (tshirt and shorts) I will carry a Kel-Tec P32. If has a clip and I simply put it in the waistband and use clip on the pants.

I like th eGlocks because they are hammerless and won't snag on my arm or anything external. It also has an internal safety so if the time comes that I have to use it, there is no worries in my head about whether the safety is on or off.

HeatTreater 08-20-2009 12:00 PM

I like my charter arms pug in .44 cal special.

Scouter 08-20-2009 01:29 PM

.380.

Why?

I live in Louisiana and I can. Being one of the only states with a "shoot the carjacker law", you never know when you'll get a chance to blow some crackhead away. And with the doors off, it's like baiting a mouse with cheese.:brows:

Problem is, they know about this law too and assume everyone's carrying. And you don't even need a CCW to keep it in plain sight or hidden in the Jeep.

Jason_G 08-20-2009 02:26 PM

.380.
Have you been able to find ammo? I've been thinking of getting one of those little Ruger LCPs, but back when I was looking, .380 was tough to come by. Has it gotten better?

Not here we are just starting to find some 9's .380's are very hard to get and you pay when you find them:what?:

I carry a Grendel P-30 .22 Mag with 30 shot mag plus two full extra mags in an Uncle Mikes ballistic nylon. My wife carries the same with her.

I keep a Ruger SR9 in the Jeep. I won it at a gun bash last month on a $3 pick of the table ticket, 4 of us went and 3 of us won a gun ... good day, plus all the food and drinks you can handle.

That's true with a stock production piece....which mine is not. I drilled and tapped the butt of the handle frame for a steel eyelet. I made a watch fob out of it. The eyelet actually works as an extension on the stock and makes it much more comfortable to shoot. You're absolutely right though.....they are "up close and personal" firearms. At least if you wanna hit somethin.

In the pants holster. It is a big pistol... but then again... I am a big dude. For comfort sake lately I have been carrying the little Kel Tec 32 in my pants with the belt clip and the Five Seven stays in the Jeep. Some of the folks who came to the ORV ride in Hot Springs, AR a few weeks ago got a chance to shoot it too... good times. :D
