1979 postal dj5
so hope im posting this in the correct spot but here goes im looking at buying a 79 postal jeep and i was wondering if anyone knows how they handle off road? anything helps im looking at in a few hours thanks
You would have to make a lot of modifications to convert it to a 4wd. Also, they are drum brakes all the way around, no power brakes and parts are nearly impossible to find. The floors and upper windshield frame on most of them rust to a point that you can flinstone it and see daylight through the frame. Where are you buying it from? Not the Postal Service, are you?
They're nice to "restore" or resto-mod for street or light offroad use; but unless you're planning a full drivetrain and axle swap, I'd look for a regular CJ. For true offroad use, you're going to end up replacing everything (and possibly also) the framerails.

so ive been really excieted about this build so far.
here is what i did day one:
fixed carb
sanded it down for paint and rust removal
found, bought installed original gauges that work
found bought installed original ignition that works
custom exhaust
ripped out all interior (floormating ceiling linners) old mail junk not needed
relocated and rermoved the huge mail mirrors
welded all hoes and fixed all rust
whashed inside and out with rust killer
toped all fluids and drove it around the rest of the day
