Default Need CJ7 Guru!

Alright my buddy called me today and said he wanted to cahnge some things on his 76 cj7. It has a 304 engine, auto trans with quadratrac. Now i know little about cj's but am very able when it comes to working on jeeps. He thinks the trans is a turbo 400, but not sure. He grenaded the front axle and wants to replace the entire axle and get rid of the quadratrac. I know some bracket relocation will be needed. What came on these Jeeps and what can i replace them with with? Are there any special adapters I will need? I think he said the housing on the front axle is centered and not to the pass or driver side? Is this right? Can somebody please give me some info. Thanks

If the front axle is centered, it might already have some adapters on it. You might be able to converst to a dana 300 transfer case and a dana 60 front end.

another '76 owner. man, they are fun to work on Not sure how far into this he is but '76 CJ7s can be strange depending on production time. Mine shares a lot of parts with CJ5s that later produced ones don't. Just be patient with it.

Can't help on the axle / quadratrac questions. mine started life as an early Levi's edition - basically the 304 is the only upgrade it got from the factory.

I work on my parents CJ-7. It is a turbo 400.

I would dump the whole jeep unless you want to restore it.

The automatic and quadratrac will not let you back down a hill, its like being in neutral.

Those rigs are for logging roads and hunting but not serious four wheeling.

Sorry, just my opinion.

DUMP THE WHOLE JEEP, ARE YOU KIDDING? Do a little research. I am not sure about the front axle being centered, that sounds rare. It sounds like you don't mind the idea of a rebuild. think about this idea. keep the 304. get a torquflight 999 trany and dana 300 transfer, they should bolt to that engine. look for some '70s era scout axles. they are dana 44s and will do well for tire up to 35". this should all be easy to find in a junk yard. the only real mod might be the transmision mount, and wideining the front axle perch about 2" each way. If you can weld those are easy job and you will be happy with the jeep when you are done. Also a couple hundred in drive shaft mods. PM me for any questions or if you need some moral support.

Definately Turbo 400. That tranny is fine if you like autos...but the quadratec is shit. Chain has to be replaced frequently when used heavily (not a hard job, but at 150 bucks a pop...). For mud/water/trails they are fine. For rocks, throw that shit away and get a dana...I think the 300 might bolt right up to the tranny.

pumkin should be right center if I remember right.
