Default Auto Transmission not shifting on 4.0L YJ

Hello, on my Wrangler YJ 4.0L build 1995 i do have a auto transmission. When i start the engine in the morning (after many hours standing) the transmission does not shift into 2nd or 3rd gear for 1-2 miles or so when it is around 5C Celsius or colder.

I do not have this issue when it is like above 5C Celsius or after a short time of standing.

What could be the reason for this? I was told that not much can be done except a full replacment of the auto transmission. A bit much i find considering that the transmission is otherwise working normaly.

Another question. In one garage they told me that this auto transmission is fully mechanically controlled, in another garage they told me that this transmission is one part mechanic the other electronicaly controlled. What is correct?

Well, thanks anyway for your input :-)

Have you checked the transmission fluid level once it's warmed up?
How long since the transmission fluid and filter were changed?

No i did not check this... i can not do this myself. I believe that nothing much was ever done to the transmission. The car has now about 100'000 miles on it. Would this be a lot of miles or just average use?

I was told that there is not much that can be done (maintenance wise), like changing the oil or filter except "a full" revision. This would cost me about 2000-3000$ a replacement (refurbished) would cost me about 4000$ and a new one something like 6000$ !?

Im certainly not a specialist... i'm trying to find out what is best for me and the car :-)

I would be very sad indeed if one day i would have to say good bye to my wrangler yj.

My suggestion is to have the regular service done to the transmission (fluid and filter).
It's not expensive, and it just may fix it.

Also, post in a YJ forum, if you haven't already done so . See what they have to say.
