Default Help, '05 LJ

I have '05 LJ with the I6. On our way to Moab the check engine light came on so I nursed it into town and stopped at a shop to have them read the code. It came back as a hole in my Cat. Converter.... No big deal for the weekend, not an immediate fix, I thought i would figure it when I got back to Salt Lake. When I got back I took it to my trusted mechanic, he said the same thing, hole in the cat. needs to be fixed but could hold off while I save up the funds, since I am lucky enough to have the expensive one, $600+ plus install... Anywho, I am driving home that night from work, about 20 miles on the freeway, about 10 min into the drive the check engine light starts flashing and the power cuts out, still running but NO power. So I work my over to the shoulder and shut it down, do the basic checks, nothing everything is fine, start it back up, sounds perfect... Not wanting to risk it i call a tow truck and have it towed back to my shop. The next day I call and they say the fuel pump is acting a little funky, but they wanted to keep it for the day and see what the computer would read. The next morning I call and they say, "Fuel Pump" its gonna be about $400. So i say ok, lets do it. They put the new one on and I pick it up after work and head home, and guess what, it died in the EXACT spot as it did before... Same thing, pull to the side, do my checks, everything is fine, so I decide to see if will drive, it drove about 2-3 min and then started to bog out, pull over let it sit then start it and go again. Did this for about 10 miles till I got to a buddies house and I called my wife to pick me up. Let it sit for the weekend and tried to drive it back to the shop on Monday, made it about 100 yards past the on-ramp and bogs out again, i say F it and call the mechanic and calls a tow truck. Get to work and call the shop to see what they say, he says "bad fuel switches" or something but not to worry he is going to fix it. I pick it up after work and am told he drove it for a couple hours and NO issues, so start driving home and once again it starts to bog out. I call the mechanic and he tells me he installed a computer that is reading everything so he wants to me try and continue to drive and so the comp. will get a read out of whats going on. I nurse it back to the shop in the morning and now he is telling me it is the cat. converter and its bogging because he thinks its getting plugged up.

To me it seems like it is vapor locking, but he says it is impossible for these engines to do so...?

Should I ask for my money back on the Fuel pump?

Anyone got any ideas?

Sorry for the novel....

Thanks!

i highly doubt its vapor locking. fuel filter is clogged maybe? i feel that's more likely than the cat being clogged

This Sucks. Im gonna call bullshit on him driving it for a couple of hours and "installing a computer" thats reading everything. It'll be tough to get a straight refund on the work he did do but id try like hell to get the labor on the cat covered..i'd be more pissed about him bull shitting me than anything else

change the cat out or just cut it out and put a pipe in its place. the cat is bad and thats what happens when they get plugged up/bad. Happen to our 94 YJ and i just cut it out and had a pipe welded in its place. in my opinion the fuel pump was never an issue and possibly wasted your money. Good news is now you have a new fuel pump and won't have to worry about that for a while now. Hope you get it fixed soon though and keep us posted when you get it all figured out.
