Default Buying an XJ

Hi all. I have a 2008 JK, 45000 miles and it's in great shape. I'm a third year student in college and this year my JK isn't being treated so nicely by people in my parking lot. Anyhow, I got the idea that I would buy a cheap vehicle for a couple years to keep at school with me instead of the JK. People tend to to stupid things when alcohol is involved, especially when other vehicles are involved. I found a '95 XJ country with 125,000 miles. Looks to be in great shape. At a gmc dealer. Asking $2900. Any tips on what to look for? Price I should be able to get it for? Someone to tell me in making a horrible decision, etc.?

I loved my 98 XJ. Check the rocker panels and around the top, drivers side of the windshield for rust. Seems to be first places. If it's the 4.0 I6 and its been taken care of, it's a great motor. Still a straight front axle, so you'll be able to have a lot of fun with an XJ too. Sucks that a-holes are messing with your JK.

Thanks.. I haven't been able to decide if I should roll the dice on an old XJ and hope for no major mechanical issues or save the money to fix up the JK when I'm done here. I.E. Detailing or repaint and dent removal if necessary

That's a decision only you can make for yourself. But you have to do what you think is best. I know how hard it was for me to give up my YJ a few years ago. I finally got my JK about two months ago.

I just bought a 90 XJ with 200,000 miles and it runs great. Payed $3000 and feel I got a pretty good deal. I have spoke to a lot of guys that I've wheeled with that own XJ's and they haven't had anything bad to say. Make sure it has the 4 liter I6, if it's taken care of its bullet proof. I just got finished spraying mine with truck bed liner. Not worried about scratches now.

We had 2 97 xjs not gonna lie when I go to look at it to buy the first thing I do is take a screw driver and climb underneath and hit the floors to make sure they are not rotted. Pisses people off but I'm the one spending money and if you take care of it I've seen them go upwards and passed 300k miles and the first one we payed $1000 with 197k miles the second we paid $1400 with 156k miles both ran and drove great

Just park it somewhere safer, like a garage, and bus or walk back to school. Unless garage parking is exhorborently expensive in your area it should be cheaper then paying for another vehicle or repainting your jk.

I had a 91 and a 96 XJ and I miss them like crazy. I will be buying another one as a daily driver whenever I start the stretch on my JK. That inline 6 is no joke and if you need to fix anything, the parts are cheap. I've replaced alternators, water pumps, crankshaft position sensors, radiators, starters, etc on my XJs and did it all myself. Never need to replace an engine though. The 91 had 270k on it when I sold it.

Had a 95 XJ with well over 400 thousand kilometers on it. Bullet proof machine mechanically speaking. With all that driving and in this climate I never kept up on rust control as others have mentioned.
Buy one. They stopped building them because they never needed parts replaced. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Only reason we gave it to the Kidney Foundation charity is because we had 3 Jeeps and only 2 drivers. Extra plates and insurance were adding up.

I had a 97 XJ. Even though it was two wheel drive I still took it everywhere. Loved that thing. Got rid of it to get the JK. It had 230ish thousand miles on it, it had some quirks, and lots of leaks, but I drove that thing all over the south. The only time it ever left me on the side of the road was the night before I traded it in, but that's a whole other story.
