external antenna for handheld
While I study for my ham license, I've decided to buy a baofeng uv82hp to be able to monitor and listen to ham operators, and learn how to access repeaters etc. I'm going to start with the mentioned baofeng and then move towards a kenwood later after getting my license. I have a bracket made on the drivers cowling of the JKUS that I will use to mount a external antenna. Just wondering what folks would recommend for an antenna for that location which I can mount to a HT inside the jeep. Sorry not sure why this post posted twice and not sure how to erase the other post

I only recommend equipment that I personally use.
In this case I recommend the Larsen (through the glass) model KG2/70. I mount it on the left rear quarter window near the top so about 95% of the 37" whip antenna is above the top. I use it with my Yaesu VX6 HT and my FT 897 mobile unit. This is possible because the antenna has an adapter at the end of the Coax (at very little extra cost) that will allow connection to a HT. I can hit repeaters 50+ miles away (on mountain tops) with both the HT and mobile radios. I have moved this antenna from my '08 JKU"X", to my '12 JKU Sahara and to my current JKU Rubicon. The whip can be unscrewed and removed in about 15 seconds for storage in your JK. It costs about $100 US.
