I spent my first afternoon on my cb and I have a few questions first is a base station more powerful than mobil unit the guys were 30 miles away and sounded like the were sitting on my bumper. next what is a shootout and why does everybody hate them but swear the could win them and last other than 9 and 19
are there any other channels with special purpose ?

first ,the base station gets out so good because the antenna is usually 30 to 60 feet in the air, above all the houses so there is not to much to stop the radio wave.as far as the radio goes ,they are only suppose to put out 4 watts,it can go as high as 30 watts depending on the radio that you have

shootout is when two or more people in a general location try to talk over each other and a person from a far away location tells them who they can hear.it is usually people with alot of power.i once seen a guy with a big block chevy motor mounted in the back of a van with 6 alternators just to run the 60000 watts of power that he had running.there used to be some freekish stuff out there.ALOT OF BAD RF FLYING AROUND THERE

On the CB channels, base stations do not...ah er.....are "not supposed to have" more power....lol. But most base stations are running full size antennas that radiate the signal more efficiently, thus a better, and usually louder, signal. The bigger the antenna, and the higher up in the air, the better the signal will be, which makes it pretty much like adding an amp.

As far as channels go...."it used to be" that usually cannels 30-40 were designated for SSB use. As far as law......no I don't believe it ever was, but more of an unspoken rule between CBers. Like I've said before, I don't keep up with the CB crew anymore, so this may all be different now.
