FWIW, handheld cb s do work.
They work better if you can use an external antenna with them such as a magnetic antenna mounted to the right side of the cowling.

ive been usein a hand held for 3 months now no troubles on the trails i can hear anyone in a couple mile radius on channel no good for highway though if someone knows what is needed to hook these up to an antenea please post or pm me

Only way to be effective with a handheld is to use it with an external antenna.

I have a hard mount unit in each of my jeeps but I also just picked up an hand held unit. It was on close out for $29. I still need to check the range and compare it to my other CB's, but for the price it should be worth it.
