FWIW, handheld cb s do work.
They work better if you can use an external antenna with them such as a magnetic antenna mounted to the right side of the cowling.

I have an antenna mounted on my tailgate and use it with a handheld radio using an adapter I got at Radio Shack. The Radio Shack product number is 55012515.

You can find it here: h t t p://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2293328

Hearing is one thing but being able to communicate back using a handheld in the Jeep is something else.
Only way to be effective with a handheld is to use it with an external antenna.

I have a hard mount unit in each of my jeeps but I also just picked up an hand held unit. It was on close out for $29. I still need to check the range and compare it to my other CB's, but for the price it should be worth it.

Ive tried a few hand helds because I don't want to mount one. I have had no luck. If you find one that works good let me know.
