On 10m SSB about 150 or so, the radio is kinda tired I've talked the hell out of it.......plus my tech license limits me to 200 watts on 10m anyway....

Default Great site for those getting into HAM

There is a free site (run by a few current and ex-Microsoft employees).
They offer classes in the Seattle, Wa area. I did some of the online material and took the class as well to get my Technician's license.

It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot

Here is the main site

Here is the site w/training material links

I am not a huge HAM guy. I got into it for my Church responsibility. We are very organized for emergency prep. Every Sunday @ 7PM there is a an NET we all get on to practice and stay in touch that ranges for a large part of Washington. I've gotten to know people that otherwise I would not have.

I hope to convince my wife to get hers so that when I am at work I can get a hold of her in an emergency. A GRMS nor CB will work for my situation. Abilities to use repeaters is also great for further reach.

I have a 706mkiig and they are very easy to modify for 11m (remove a single diode). As for the legality of it, it's not illegal to modify a radio to operate out of its type accepted band(s), it's only illegal to USE it out of its type accepted band(s). There is a very good reason for this, there is a little known FCC regulation that says that in an emergency (the life or death kind) it is permissible to use any frequency, in any mode, with or without proper licensing in order to make contact with someone and get help.

Which brings me to another point I haven't seen mentioned in this thread. The purpose of Amateur Radio is emergency communications. This goes hand in glove with trail running. Have a fire extinguisher in your Jeep? How about a first aid kit? Why not have a contingency for calling for help too? If you're smart, you're not wheelin' alone, but what if for some reason you find yourself seperated and in need of help? Gonna rely on your 14 watt CB or cell phone out in the hills and valleys of the trails? Not gonna work. Ham radio just makes a lot of sense for hardcore Jeepers that really do like to get off the beaten path.

Geko45, since you've got a Icom 706mkIIg , the very unit I've been looking at for the Jeep, can you use it as a "repeater" for your handheld (mine is a IC-92AD) for when you are away from the Jeep?

Also, can the IC-92AD be easily modified to act as a handheld CB for "emergency" use only of course.

I'm absolutely not into illegal activities at all, but I do like all the capability I can get.
