Yeah its gotta be something with a short because of that new bracket.

I got a Teraflex Antenna mount being shipped out and a single layer bracket being made to test if that is indeed whats going on.

Northridge 4x4 rocks btw. I told them I was going on this Jeep trip in just about a week and he shipped it out 2 day air. Not sure if that is standard shipping from Northridge..but I was pleased to see that.

 

At one point you stated that the hole in the bracket is exactly the same size as the through bolt. There is you short. There should be and insulating piece of plastic so that the center lead is not shorted to the outer lead. Leave everything in place and remove just the antenna and measure the resistance between the inner and outer leads, you probably have 0 ohms or close to it.

 

Well it will be interested to see what happens when I get the new mount on there. If that doesnt fix it then we know there is something we've missed and its back to the drawing board.

I would presume this would be it though as it was working perfectly before the antenna mount was swapped.

 

Did you measure the resistance between the two conductors?

 

Probably not. I think he just needs to realize that again, it's not the bracket but possibly just the way the antenna is mounted to the bracket. If the hole is too small.......make the hole bigger. But I guess it's easier to just buy a new bracket....

 

Any updates on this? Would like to know what happens so if I run into this problem when I install mine. Thanks.

 

It was the bracket. Turned out that the way it was made that it was indeed causing the short. All sorts of wackiness going throught it.

The hole was big enough it was just the bracket.

Got the teraflex antenna mount put on the jeep..instantly fixed again. SWR is back to safe levels and everything is coming in loud and clear.

Lesson learned. Just spend the money on the damn Teraflex mount. its badass

I can't actually. I'm not versed in the whole electrical thing about ohms and amps and volts and such.

But, by Sherlock Holme's Theory of Deduction. When everything else turned out to not have a change in the way my CB worked...and the last thing changed was the antenna mount...and it worked...Then I think I found my SWR Killer.

I figure it was the way it was made because previous brackets with the same design but only one piece of metal instead of 2 caused no problems.

 

I understand your thought process, but the fact is, if two pieces of metal are welded together like he did, the antenna "should" see it as one solid piece. This is why it doesn't make since other than a direct short between antenna and bracket.
