How crucial is it that i get a cb?

This is true. Most rat shack employees just give you a dumb look if you ask any questions about radio gear.

Not to mention what little gear they still carry is crap!

Stick with a reputable online retailer if possible.

A cb is inexpensive and will help you out more than most other things people often get first when they get their jeep. So provided you have a first aid kit, and recovery gear the next thing should be a cb. I've been in situations where the person in front of me was taking a bad angle and making it worst by trying to correct and could have rolled it...through the cb I was able to tell him to stop and I got out and spotted him. Get the cb...my first one was less than $25 on Amazon.

IMHO, even if you get a handheld and a mag mount antenna, it would help when on the trail with a jeep group.
They could spot you thru a tough spot if necessary.
