Scanners?
There is not a ham unit I know of that does trunk tracking, and that is essential if you want to follow a conversation and your municipality uses trunked radio. The channels on a trunked system are virtual, and a given conversation can hop amongst the group of frequencies assigned to that trunked system. A conventional frequency scanning radio is pretty worthless unless it supports some type of third party trunk tracking SW. And though there are some that support add on APCO25 digital standards for voice decoding, I don't know of any yet that trunk track a distributed system. Go to radioreference.com to get some firsthand info from the guys that install and support these systems and first responders for public service agencies around the country.
OK, I've done a little research, and it seems the Uniden 350-C is not a "trunking" scanner.........pretty much worthless in this area since Highway Patrol (State Police) and most of the larger counties have all gone to the trunked system.
However.......the Uniden BC-8T IS a trunking scanner, goes for $175 on amazon.com. I'm thinking this is the one I'm gonna get.
