I took some of the paint off the mount on the front side and back where the bolts go through. Did you take some off the tire mount itself or just the back side of the Terraflex mount? Where did you grind off the paint for the coax stud? Top side or bottom?

You want to take the paint off the bottom of the mount since that's where the ground of the stud makes contact, The ground off on the area where the bolts makes contact with mount, the bolts thread into the tailgate which is more than enough of a ground.

I even tested my work after with a multi meter and got 1ohm resistance from the stud to the frame of the jeep so I knew right away no additional ground cable was needed.

One thing to make sure is make sure you have the nylon bushing correctly in place.

I have the stud on properly. I will try to take some more paint off and remeter it before I run a ground. Thanks for the info.

Bottom. That is the only place I scrapped any paint off. You do that and I think you'll be golden.

To me it sounds like you removed the paint at where you mount the bracket to the tailgate but you should be removing paint from the bottom where the stud goes through for the antenna.

Noxian and JKU09 that did the trick. I scraped some paint off the bottom and its all golden now. It showed a short antenna at first. adjusted it up and now get 1.2 on ch1, 1.2 on 20 and 1.8 on 40. That is in the parking lot at work with a fire station next to it. Probably get it more dialed in when I can get out in an open area. Atleast I won't blow the cb up now. Thanks for all your help.

I'm glad I found this thread. I just installed my Uniden PC78LTW today. I've followed all the advice on here and my numbers are stilly off. On ch 1 my SWR is just below 1, on 20 it's about 4.8 and on 40 it's 9 and shows a short. Any advice? I've checked the antenna, it's not kinked, cut or looped anywhere. Thanks.

Glad that worked out for you. I'm not real good at electrical stuff but I had the same problems as you so I figured I'd share my experience.

Cozmik to you have a good clean ground for your antenna stud?

Scraped all the paint off the bottom of my Rugged Ridge CB mount around the opening. Its bare metal.

You try running a ground to some bare metal like the subwoofer mount?

Just trying to eliminate any possibilities.
